Key Components of the Apple and Blackberry Crumble
Apples – Look for something that isn’t overly sweet. A good old granny smith will work perfectly well, so should anything you ‘acquire’ scrumping whilst out and about. In essence, eager pie-makers must find an apple that won’t dissolve when cooking, and will have a nice tart flavour to complement the sugar.
Blackberries – These can vary from place to place, but essentially, they should be around the same size as the apple chunks. Try and go fresh, however, frozen ones will work if absolutely necessary. If unavailable, its worth experimenting with other delicious small fruits such as raspberries, blackcurrants or, blueberries.
Walnuts – Walnuts work best, in my humble opinion, but hazelnuts, or almonds will also taste great. For those poor souls with nut allergies, switch it out for tolled oats.
Partner the Crumble with Something Special
As a classic wintertime dessert, apple crumble will partner well with a traditional seasonal beverage. Therefore, hungry folks can try chomping down alongside an Irish Coffee, a Hot Rum Toddy, or a mug of Christmas Mulled Wine. Resulting an an exciting combo guaranteed to excite the taste buds.
In addition, this excellent fruity recipe will also get the heart pumping when served following its meaty cousin, the Cottage Pie of the Gods. So, get that kitchen brain into action, and go make a whole meal out of it!
