Hot Rum Toddy, a Traditional Flu Remedy Favoured by Folks the World Over
The Rum – There’s a bit of room for experimentation here, but I generally go for a light spiced rum like Captain Morgan gold. However, a dark rum will work perfectly well for those looking for a bit of extra punch. Having said that, stay away from white rums, they are a little bland for this winter tipple.
What about other kinds of alcohol? – Certainly, this recipe will lend itself perfectly well to a good, solid blended whiskey, or even a bourbon. While straight brandy, Grand Marnier, Calvados, Amaretto and Drambuie will all add they’re own interesting profile into the mix.
Turning up the heat – The biggest mistake folks make when getting their Hot Rum Toddy on is not making the thing hot enough. They will essentially add a dose of cold rum, lime juice and embellishments into a mug of hot water, bringing the overall temperature down drastically. To remedy this, and to get all the flavours working their hardest, we’ll prepare everything in a small saucepan, adding the rum right at the end. To ensure the optimal toddy, however, don’t boil the rum too long, as the vital alcohol component will begin to evaporate!

Want to leave the honey to the bees? – Switch out the honey for soft brown sugar if you’re feeling guilt-tripped by our buzzy little friends.
Room for manoeuvre – There are a few extra touches that can help develop the hot rum toddy a little further. Things like fresh ginger, vanilla, star anise, and nutmeg will all work well alongside the base recipe.
