Reportedly invented in the 1930s, the Margarita has risen to become one of the best-known drinks on the cocktail circuit. However, and in no doubt due to its intoxicating nature, news of its actual origin has become riddled in mystery. These days, many recipes include an addition of syrup as well as higher quantities of triple sec, seemingly trying to mask the taste of the tequila. Here, I will balance the 3 core flavours to prevent any single one from overpowering the cocktail. So, let’s not waste any more of your valuable drinking time, and shake up a glass of the Infamous Margarita Cocktail.

The Infamous Margarita Cocktail
Equipment
Ingredients
- Salt
- 1 Lime Wheel
- 50ml Tequila (100% Agave)
- 25ml Triple Sec
- 25ml Lime Juice
- 40g Ice
Instructions
- First, take a nice looking Lime and chop it into 3 parts, cutting a Lime Wheel out of its centre
- Next, pour some good quality carse salt onto a plate, so that it occupies an area larger than the rim of the glass
- Now, hold the glass upside down by its stem, and run one piece of the chopped lime lightly around the rim. This will prevent the juice from running down the edge of the glass

- Lightly dip the glass into the salt on the plate, so that it is evenly distributed around the rim. Then, give the base of the glass a light tap on your work surface to dislodge any loose grains, and throw out any that end up inside it
- Cut a slice from the edge into the centre of your Lime Wheel, and place it on the rim of the glass
- Now, we're ready to rock n roll. Pour 50ml of 100% Agave Tequila into the cocktail shaker, followed by 25ml of Triple Sec, and 25ml of freshly squeezed Lime Juice
- Add around 40g of Ice Cubes, then place the lid on top, and give it a ruddy good shake, until the shaker becomes cold
- Take the glass to your preferred imbibing location, and strain the contents of the shaker into it
- Sip leisurely while dreaming of Mexico

The Key to Making the Perfect Margarita Cocktail
Get a Half Decent Bottle of Tequila
Tequila, by quite a long way, represents the most important component of the drink. You don’t need to buy the best on the market, but you should definitely find something half decent. Firstly, budding mixologists should seek out a bottle made from 100% Agave, this will rule out most of the usual suspects, but believe me, it will make all the difference. Secondly, depending on your personal preference, you can either choose a Blanco tequila for a fresh, clean taste, or a Reposado if you want a deeper flavour profile. I’ve tried and tested a bunch, and I have settled on the Olmeca Altos range of spirits. These have what it takes to cut the mustard in the Margarita making world, but without breaking the bank in the process.
Use Fresh Limes for your Margarita Cocktail
I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again, don’t use that store-bought bottled tat. Squeeze your own limes like a real human being and bask in the glory of an unadulterated blast of citrus.
Salting the Rim
This has become the garnish of choice for Margarita Cocktails throughout the world. However, if salt doesn’t float your boat, then you can quite easily just omit it from your glass, or, if unsure, only add it to half of the rim. When going down the salty road, though, make sure to find a good quality condiment made of chunky crystals, and not just opt for table salt, and take extra care not to add too much!
